This position reports to

R&D Unit Lead

Your role and responsibilities

As a Materials R&D Engineer F/M/D, you will be responsible for supporting design teams in materials selection, failure analysis and continuous improvement actions related to materials. He/she will also be responsible for materials analysis through the in-house materials laboratory and/or external laboratory for advanced analysis. You will also be involved in supporting ABB's strategy for the transition to new sustainable materials.
You will join one of our multi-functional Agile teams and be fully responsible for the activity assigned to you, have the opportunity to interact with the product owner and contribute to the definition of the overall product strategy.
Lead or contribute individually to projects related to materials technology, including polymers, metals and advanced manufacturing.
Contribute to the development of new products or technologies through the selection and optimization of materials, including processes.
Support innovation, cost reduction and sustainability projects where appropriate.
Collaborate with local and global teams and universities on new materials design projects.
Plan and carry out materials analyses to support ongoing programs using existing internal and external resources, on time and to the highest quality.
Effectively communicate technical information to a wide range of audiences.
Manage chemicals for the site, including Material Safety Data Sheets, purchase approval, storage and disposal.

Qualifications for the role

  • Master's degree in materials or chemical engineering.
  • More than five years' experience in the relevant field is an asset.
  • Knowledge of material properties and specifications such as ASTM, ISO, GB, etc.
  • Practical experience of materials characterization
  • Awareness of different manufacturing processes and surface treatments.
  • Ability to work independently within an Agile team structure.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in French and English.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to interact with international teams and cooperate in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
